Can the loss of the love of one's life be compared to the loss of a father?

I felt weakened by some invisible weight. Sometimes I felt as if I could hardly get out of bed and put one foot in front of the other. I was totally out of balance.

I'm loving this book so far but I can't understand Mae's hatred for someone she's loved so much for most of her life. She seems like an incredibly spoiled brat to me although I do understand the point of where the angers supposed to be coming from in her. I'm anxious to continue in her journey.
