Diana went mad and was sent off. Salt protected her and confronted Diana after she attempted to cause a miscarriage again. Ron & Merry are living with them now and they are all going to the country. The underbutler and maid will marry and he will become the steward at Salt Manor.

Since Jane's stepmother went to Diana and told her of the marriage, I think there was a plot to get these two back together. Her father, Jacob A, and her stepmother seem to have rigged this scheme to get these two to marry. Possibly they found out the treachery that Diana had wrought and strove to repair from the grave the best they could.

The Earl is a thoroughly unlikeable character. He is bitter & resentful at being forced by honor to marry Jane. He also thinks he has been infertile for the last 10 years and didn't get her messages that she was pregnant. Jane understands the consequences of her actions and tries to take it gracefully. Jacob protected her during those 4 years. She is to be a gilded cage wife.
