IMPORTANT NOTE:
This version of The Double is an abridged one (most of them are). Although Dosto thought that the core premise of The Double was one of the most brilliant and serious ideas he ever had, he was deeply dissatisfied with how he originally executed it (accused of plagiarism/imitation to Gogol). He even wanted to rewrite it (according to a letter to his brother, 1859) but that never happened.

"Yakov Petrovich Goliadkin, the hero from The Double, is the precursor of the man from underground, of Velchaminov in The Eternal Husband, of Stavrogin in Demons, of Versilov in The Adolescent, amd finally, most tellingly, of Ivan Karamazov" [MY MAAAAAAAN ♥].
