Blyton was autistic, right? Because the way she describes things makes perfect sense to me, and I’d exactly how I would describe them. Or is that just from me reading so many of her books as a kid?

Blyton’s kid characters are often kind of assholes, and that, at least, hasn’t been sanitised.

Possibly dwarves. But definitely not elves. Whoever edited/rewrote this has messed up Blyton’s legendarium.

Those aren’t elves, those are gnomes. Jeez.

I’m criticising a lot, but the layout of the book is very nice. Rather whimsical.

Oh dear, these new illustrations don’t suit the book at all. No shade to the illustrator’s talents, they’d be fine for a modern book, but they really don’t work here.

Oof, this was written in 1939. OK, maybe they have a reason to hate the city.

What is it with Blyton’s kids all hating towns and cities? I assure you, kids who have spent their whole life in a city do not generally hate the city, they love it.

Uh oh, I seem to have a bowdlerised version. I actually don’t mind this if it’s for reading to my (so far nonexistent) kids, who won’t know the difference without reading the originals, but for my own reading, I’ll have to see if I have my original copies anywhere, or can pick some up.

Ignore that last bit, I seem to have picked up book 2 by accident.

Reading old-timey books is such a trip. I would flip the f out if I had a day’s warning to prepare for guests. Or a week’s. I need a month at least. Three is better. My aunt gives me three months’ warning when she’s coming to take me out for lunch, and I appreciate it.
