I sped up when reading dialog and slowed down during descriptive parts.

"'I am Geyen Thi Lam. This is Dao, and this is Hoa. We have been sent by The New Government of Vietnam to help your village. We are the first of many...'" These are two white men and one white woman. They have stressed the village by asking for %50 of their profit.

Kein saved Tams's life. Mai knows something is off about the boy because of how he threatened her earlier.

I chose this book because I think the cover and description were interesting.

Human vs Nature - The characters face storms, heat, and hunger as they sail from Vietnam to Thailand.

Protagonist: Mai -sympathetic - "Kien had had to work his way through life without anyone to help him...Maybe he just doesn't know how to be nice, she thought," (page 51).
