I realized very early in the preface she expects her readers to be more fluent in Christian subculture than I anticipated. Mainly because she used the adjective “plain” to mean Amish/Mennonite and I’m sitting there like “what’s being ugly got to do with it?”

I was expecting full, academic prose, but I'm finding this book quite readable. There's a good blend of analysis and narrative. I carried it around all day today in case I had a moment to read, though I must admit I found myself hiding the cover.

Currently reading about the Evangelical discourse community....timely topic.
