She was entirely harmless and was allowed to look after the room of one of her doctors. Every morning she presented him with a bouquet from the hospital gardens. Every day she bought two sheets from the canteen. One she kept for herself, the other for a person she was unwilling to name. For this person, she looked all morning. She did not find him. Then sadly, she gave the sweet to the staff nurse.

Towards the end of the evening, however, her presence at the teashop he had wished away had developed into a comfort because of this very silence. When in bed, he wilfully stimulated the return of that moment of hallucination in the white void, the loss of reality, his alarm was actual, and he said, 'Doggie.'
'Doggie.'
Her hardness had vanished. He could tell she had been crying.

The tree, changing, and developing with the year, made its point daily. And when, sitting at the Sunday tea, trying to reassure himself by his precise, neat, slow gestures, he sometimes said, 'You are part of me, Margaret. I don't know what I would do without you,' he spoke with an urgency and gratitude she did not fully understand.

But Mrs Springer had already moved on, having, even before entering the house, made herself mistress of it, as she had made herself mistress of both its occupants.
In the second week of March Mr Stone and Mrs Springer were married, when on the tree in the school grounds the buds had swollen and in sunshine were like points of white.
