Always a great read where I discover some overlooked nugget of grimdark brilliance.

This book makes me want to roll up some characters and play some D&D!...which, sadly, I have not played in many years :(

I love this book now. It's incredible. It's most similar to The Silmarillion, only more violent. Like The Silmarillion it doesn't quite let u sink entirely into the characters like modern Fantasy or even The Hobbit or LOTR; it's a more mythical storytelling style. Many AWESOME events, though it is not Quest-Fantasy, centered on battles between elves, dwarves, men vs their betrayers, the undead & demons.

I really dislike the cover art. This is a no-holds-barred Fantasy that would seem at first to be like Edding's Belgeriad series, or even the Dark Elf books by Salvatore w/ Bruenor Battlehammer. But it's harsher & relentlessly violent at times. I like it but think I would've liked it even more when I was a teen. The magic is interesting but sometimes overcooked. Some really great, memorable parts & characters.
