Can’t believe I bought this in 7th/8th grade with me being an animal lover! The pony in the title by 1/3 through didn’t make it; another horse was killed; and the book didn’t flow.

reread! i can't get over how steinbeck describes food. his writing is masterful as always but im hungry just reading...
distinctly, steinbeck's works are very ethel cain. i just love the imagery. there's almost a dusty cloud hanging over the way he writes and the drawl and prose so evident in his writing, so telling of the times and his birthright
