We learn that in the mornings when Derrick and his family eat breakfast, there is no basketball talk at all. His father quizzes him on what he has learned in school and his mother quizzes him on the sermon they just heard.

Derrick is given a tough time at practice since he's the new kid and on varsity as a freshman. HE always gets matched up against a tough player but believes its better for him to impress if he's on a tougher player.

Basically D-Bow had been going to practice for the past few weeks with his new high school but he does't get Playing time at practice. The sophomores make him feel excluded and the other freshman don't pass him the ball when he gets in. When he finally get in he makes a great play underneath the basket but the coach pulls him out and one of the sophomores sub in for him. Finally he realizes he didn't make the 5.

the theme of the book so far is to not accept what others say. I know that because in the book the main character doesn't listen to his enemy in basketball which he is calling him horrible, but it doesn't faze him and he keeps saying to himself that hes better than what he says and proves it.
