As Skeeter trains the Lady, his Uncle sees him maturing - the boy is finally allowed a cup of coffee with cream, and at the end, he is offered the coffee, black. Skeeter made the only decision he could, about returning Lady to her rightful owners, which reveals the upbringing influence of his Uncle and their moral standings.

A sequel to the original magazine short story was written, in 1942, called, "Please come home, my Lady. I always find the local folk speech interesting. The origins of the speech is fascinating and educational.

The writing reminds me of Ole Yeller and The Yearling, by Rawlings, along with other similar books from that era, and setting. A simple story that is abounding in morality and care for man and beast. The stories are often set in the poorer areas of a state, such as Mississippi and Missouri, and the Everglades in Florida. A movie is made, which I feel was well done. I enjoyed the colorful banter of local talk.

A gem of a "coming of age" story, published in 1954, is about Skeeter, a young boy growing up on the Pascagoula, and his Uncle Jesse, who find an odd dog, a rare Basenji. The dog laughs instead of barking. The boy is dirt poor and the dog means everything to him. He trains him to point, for birding. The hunting dog is from Africa and dates back to the 12th dynasty of Egypt.
