Status Updates From What Happened at Midnight

Sir Walter is awful.

Mary hugged the puppies to her & stood. She had forty good years behind her—a life that anyone would be lucky to live. Was it selfish to be glad that it still felt like the beginning?
“I wonder who’s at Beauregard’s farm now?” he said. “I think they’ll have milk.”
John put his arm around her & she snuggled up against him.
“I think,” she said, “I’m going to need another forty years of you.”

But then, what age took, age returned.

“There’s only one way to be respectable.” She leaned her head against him. “But there are so, so many ways to be married. I think we’ll find a thousand variations on a theme of marriage, John.”

“She’s right,” John said swiftly. “I believe her implicitly. Because she’s right. And because it’s logical—because it’s the only explanation that makes sense of the available evidence.”

you know, I love courtney milan’s little modern-day wisdoms, whatever

“Don’t be ridiculous, John,” she said when she’d pulled the sleeves away from his wrists. “If we waited until we were married, you’d own the right to use my body. Now, I can say no.”

those little milan touches...that’s what I like

Pretty solid read, even on a reread, but missing some of Courtney Milan’s humor. Not my all time favorite, but well worth reading.
