One thing I respect about this series is that's it's not random crime cases, Hambly is truly committed to the question of "what profound crisis of identity and/or trauma could this awaken in my protagonist?" every single time 😆

I'm enjoying this book but it's a little hard to keep track. January is posing as a slave to investigate a mystery on a sugar plantation with so many people. I was wishing the author had included a list, but she has January finding things out gradually and I guess she didn't want to ruin that. I wish I'd made a list myself.

As with all this series we feel the horror of slavery. And nobody knew it would ever end.
