Actually, their first meeting didn't convey his confidence. It showed a young man helping another fellow, which doesn't mean he's confident.

Writing wise, this isn't good. The "rubbing the back of his neck" is a sign of nervousness, and the adverb explaining it is pulling the reader out of the flow.
