I really wish I knew if Tolstoy thought the great men of history are truly great or just a figurehead for circumstances often beyond their control. I’m so far in this book and I really wish I knew that. I wonder if Tolstoy will tell me at some point.

Authors need to start writing interpersonal relationships this way again. I'm enamored with the way Tolstoy writes his characters as human beings. Their reactions, their moods, their thoughts. It's brilliant and I love it.
