Nabokov’s crafts a takedown on someone’s perceived illiteracy that oozes arrogance, humor, and gargantuan contempt.

There’s a dose of early postmodernism here. Nabokov’s style is so fluid and pristine that his experimental structures and narrators prefigure a number of the postmodern qualities.

Incredibly fluid writing is one of Nabokov’s trademarks, and this is one of the finest examples. In some ways, this is a proto-Pale Fire, but the sensibility is very different, less humorous and more elegiac.
