currently reading about the jobs that many of the homeless had and it reminds me of a section of Evicted by Matthew Desmond. while technically “unemployed” on paper, many of the homeless were working physically taxing jobs for just a couple dollars a day, as employers often took advantage of their desperation. most, if not all, are paid less than non-homeless workers for the same labor.

digging into childhood stories and differences in contact with families post-homelessness

no longer rooting very strongly for these people anymore lol. the detailed view of the homeless woman’s childhood was insightful and helped me understand how her childhood trauma has shaped her adulthood. im hoping we get a similar detailed look into some of the men’s childhood experiences. this is becoming one of my favorite book club books ever… i see a five star rating for this book in my future

while the characters we are following steal lumber and other items, i find myself rooting for their survival. there are some interesting findings in this research. most surprising so far is that sharing among addicts does not decrease when the price of drugs decreases. there was no decrease in sharing heroin year-over-year when bags decreased from $20 to $7. sharing is insurance! i didnt know the moral economics here

ive only really gotten through the intro, but i can tell this book is going to be a heavy read. im predicting it will give me a whole new perspective on addiction, homelessness, and the relationships/community that come with it.
