Among the most flattering compliments I imagine for a book is to nominate it as the book "one always wished to read, but couldn't find". It describes the feeling of consonance one finds between the book and our opinions or emotions. Nevertheless, surely the highest tribute paid to a book needs to be the declaration that we "wish to have written the book ourselves." That, in my view, is the case for this masterpiece.
