Status Updates From Austerlitz

I am currently reading about Austerlitz’s mother being sent to a concentration camp. The most painful realization is that I still find myself surprised by people’s detachment, allowing this to happen again even while recognizing the historical parallels. History is not only repeated - it is often quietly permitted.

Austerlitz, as an older man, has the fleeting memories of childhood return to him, and obeys an instinct to follow these memories' trail back to the vanished world he left behind when he was put on the kindertransport from Prague to London at the age of four.
