Weird personal note: we have lost much in losing Latin as the common language of the Church. So many footnotes to works in French and German of works that sound fascinating but which I'll never be able to read.

Reading this online and it's been a while since I could. Easy to pick up again (he's currently talking about writing genres of the monks and their fascination with history). This has been a great book so far, I only wish I had a physical copy!

A lovely book. The monastic tradition is worth delving into, especially its expressions of desire for Paradise, for God.
