Status Updates From Medea

Super enjoyable not having much familiarity with the Greek myth so the plot was new to me, including the twists and deaths etc, I would’ve liked more agency as I can still see her as a victim even if she does cruel things but I honestly enjoyed the audiobook so idk

Filled to the brim with ego, vanity, cruelty and just ickiness as is common with Greek myths, I really hated her dad, brother and Jason

+Medea always acted her age, so at 17 she was unfortunately very 17, but it's good writing imo and a personal grudge I have w other young characters in books
+1st person allows us to see Medea’s tendency for cruelty but also gentleness
-Jason was used as a crutch, “making” her do evil things when I would’ve preferred she just did them or did not on her own
-long so long

Medea doesn’t want her pity or forgiveness and Calsiope isn’t giving it, just is there to be with her, and Medea says she’s too late, her power is god-like to C and she’s been drowned by her sorrows and ppl taking advantage of her

C decides she will not give up on her even if she’s too late

Calsiope visits her 5 years later wanting answers for all the terrible rumors she’s heard of her, she wishes she stayed around so Medea wouldn’t have turned so bad, M's not regretful in her actions but doesn’t think she is good but her son can be

She went to be queen in Athens and gave the incontinent king an heir, but then Theseus came claiming he was the rightful heir despite the king being unable to reproduce but eventually he was swayed so Medea and her son went to Colchis where she is now queen

Hecate comes to her and says that all her sins will be absolved if she does a favor for Zeus, Hera made Heracles mad b/c he’s an illegitimate affair son so Medea undid his madness w a potion

Her sons touch the blood on Medea and she sees that they will be destined to this fate as well, to darkness and she sacrifices her own soul to save them…. She poisons them without pain to a deep sleep

She is about to be thrown to the mobs by Jason who blames her for the gods’ wrath by killing her brother and their sons but she calls on the dragon to escape

She releases the dragon from her control

She visits the new wife who is a young and naive princess head over heels for Jason like Medea was once, she lets it slip that not only did Jason wait for 3 years for her puberty but also he suggested to the king to exile Medea

She convinces the princess to wear a red dress w dark magic and it eats her up, the king tries to help and in touching it he dies slowly and painfully too

She sets the palace on fire

Her sons overheard Aegis say Medea was a witch so she finally shows them a little magic and they are raptured by it, like Jason was once upon a time, Jason is furious w Medea and she at him, they have hate sex then the next day he says her and their sons are exiled by the king to protect his daughter Jason’s future wife

The king of Athens and his wife visit, Jason is eager to be in his good standing but Aegis is more interested in Medea, she’s been locked up all these years like a shameful secret and he tells her Jason plans to take a new wife; during dinner she’s so annoyed at Jason she says that all his battles he won cuz of her or the argonauts the only one he did alone he lost against his cousin

Medea assures that their future son will be king of a kingdom and Jason forgives her outburst on the kingdoms ppl tho she didn’t ask for it nor apologized

10 yrs later they settle in Corinth w 2 sons, the younger innocent and sweet like her sister the other darker like her

Jason is hot and cold w her mostly cold prob cuz she hasn’t used magic since her pregnancy and his associations w her ruins his reputation too

Atalanta begs Medea to come w her on her quest to Caladan but Medea refuses, says no one will take her future from her and the shadows grasp A and Medea loses her friendship w her

The ppl blame Medea for the kings death, Jason is surprised that they don’t like her, the kings son comes to challenge Jason for the throne and Jason loses, they are both exiled

Medea tricks the king and his four loyal daughters into thinking she killed an old ram and brought it back to life young, the king doesn’t trust her but the daughters are so loyal to him they kill him begging Medea to perform the magic on him, instead he jsut dies and the dark spirits steal their voices

Jason is furious she gave away the fleece, his anger reminds her of her father, but she says it’s powerless and now he’s happy cuz it means his uncle will be unsuspecting of their betrayal since he thinks himself invincible but she wants to punish his uncle for what he did to Jason family and protect her future w him, so Jason asks if she will kill the king since he cant be implicated or the ppl may turn against him

When they arrive back at Jasons kingdom, they meet his old and frail uncle who said he wouldn’t exchange the throne for the fleece but to name him heir, so not now, Jason’s men are outside their loyalties wavering now that the journey is over and Atalanta tells Medea to be his wife not his weapon; Medea gives his uncle the fleece knowing its powerless

The men do a play about Jason’s adventures so far and Medea is pissed that he slept w a green before coming to Colchis and also told them about their intimate moments w the fire balm, he says he needed to so they would trust her, he says her paranoia is just like her fathers, she wants to be worthy of his love

Circe warned her from invoking those spirits but M doesn’t want to be held back anymore

They encounter sirens, M gets nose bleed trying to ward them off but Atalanta says that she’ll die fighting them w dark magic, M remembers that Circe said sirens can only be defeated w similar power so Atalanta grabs Orpheus’ lyre while Medea invades his kind carefully to pull the sirens out so he can play and they can all escape
