The vernacular is confusing. Is this American or British or Australian? Some words like "soccer" are American but others seem British. Is this bad editing or do other countries say "soccer" and "mum"?

It's hard to put this book down.

I like this book. It sorta sounds like a 40 year old man trying to sound like a 16 year old...but I'm still enjoying it. I was actually more surprised by the word "soccer" than "alas". Do Brits call the game soccer? Maybe so. I thought it was football everywhere but here. Alas, wtf do I know?
