I find that I’m enjoying this bouncing back and forth between 1805 and 1813.
To highlight the parallels in the succession of events from both time periods, especially as it affected Maureen’s life.
I’m hoping that she’ll find that this present time, what she sees as a tragedy is a misfortune and nothing that Julien deliberately set forth or intended to happen. ☹️

Let me guess. Ethan, Lord Hawthorne (Maureen’s/Reenie’s father) is the cousin who came to a suspicious end to give the Lord Admiral his Barony.
Is a baron referred to as Lord? Or just Baron? I can probably look that up ... 😆

Oh, my. Maureen had waited eight years to exact revenge? So they were married when he was at most twenty-one!

Aha.
Julien’s tale is akin to My Fair Lady or Pygmalion.
I’m envisioning Anne Bonny as Maureen Hawthorne ... Black Sails pirate(ss?). 😁

Pink’s song “Try” just came on from my Amazon playlist, and the chorus seems fitting for Lily and Webb:
Where there is desire, there is bound to be a flame.
And where there is a flame, someone’s bound to get burned.
But just because it burns, doesn’t mean you’re gonna die.
You gotta get up and try, try, try.
You gotta get up and try, try, try.
😁

Lily is a widow. Thomas was her husband’s name. ☹️

Chapter 1 ... here we are five years later (1800).
Whew! That makes Lily at least 20.
And Webb 28.
Okay. I can stomach that. 😆

Lily is presently only fifteen.
Which means she was only 13 when she became infatuated with Webb?!
Anyways, that makes them eight years apart in age. Please tell me they don’t get together until she is older. 🤦🏻♀️

Now I’m on to the next book in the trilogy.
Webb is three and twenty in 1795.
According to Wikipedia, this is about two years after Marie Antoinette’s execution, which featured in the previous installment.

Webb is nearly 10 years younger than Giles.
Lily looks to Giles to be seven or eight years younger than Sophia.
And is infatuated with Webb.
I thought somewhere in the story, it was hinted at that Sophia is in her young 20’s? With an indiscretion at 15 in her sullied past?

Oh, duh. If I’d just been patient, I would have gotten the answer to my own question soon enough. Webb is this Lord Dryden’s son.
Also, Sophia’s father is a French nobleman. Mother is an English beauty who tossed over her English betrothed to marry the father.
Does that explain the odd accent? Mix of French & English? Or learned French in an English household?

Giles is 31.
He started working for Dryden @ 16, and he has since gained 15 years of experience.
Dryden is a bespectacled, white-haired old man? I guess he’s not the (Webb?) Dryden in the next book of the series?

Since I’ve borrowed the trilogy thru Kindle Unlimited, I’ll count each portion separately, but I’ll keep track of my progress here. I’ve added an extra book to my 2020 Reading Challenge goal to account for this trilogy. 😁
