Such a good book so far. Already I feel such kinship to Orwell: “ Orwell rejected the system completely and chose not to compete on its terms. “ what a wise man.

"Those were not the days of multiple-choice examinations. Instead, the students in the Oxford exam room were required to write a series of essays." - Just fancy that!

On the Opium Wars: "It is as if Colombians had destroyed al U.S. border facilities and thereafter, without restriction, hooked the American population on cocaine." - Oh dear. This might be a painful read.

The thesis of this book is that, despite having wildly different backgrounds, Waugh and Orwell were the same man (you might have guessed from the title!). Reviews I've read have condemned this thesis as extremely weak, which is probably why I managed today to pick up a copy of this book for $10. But these are two of my favourite authors, so am very excited about having the opportunity to read this!
