Death is an offense to beauty; no embalmer’s art can possibly restore it. We may soften the horror of death by honoring the corpse. We may patch it up, preserve it, dress it in going-away clothes, place it in a restful couch, surround it with flowers, arrange the pink, pale lights, burn it or bury it. But disposing of the body does not provide a satisfying answer to the mystery of death, at least for most people.
