Interesting so far, I've only ever been taught the importance and inevitability of military emancipation, a shallow yet sufficient view at the philosophical debate pertaining to 'man', property and law is enjoyable so far but I do not foresee the author making any claims themselves or standing behind anything other than the common ideology of "slavery bad". I'm excited to read the rest and continue more with this era

We are a nation of lawyers and this book proves that. It shows how Americans argued both sides of the issue of slavery - freedom via war or re-enslavement via treaty. Enslavement of people and its justification was and always will be wrong.
