I just don't get it. Why in the world would a gently raised young woman actually fall in love with a man who humiliates her, bosses her around and pushes her into situations she doesn't want. Seems to me it's more likely to push her away from caring...

I really don't enjoy "forced" love scenes. Those where the heroine really doesn't want to, but the hero kisses and pushes her into it until she starts to like it. I find it hard to believe and very uncomfortable. And yet I'm still reading.

And we see the depths that Freudian language have penetrated the modern mind--The word "ego" has only existed as anything besides the Latin for "I" since Freud. Since the 20th century. No Regency era gentleman would ever complain about wounds to his ego. I'd have thought Mortimer would know better.
