Describing the Turks' army as medieval is, while disparaging, not unprofessional. However, describing them as primitive is insulting at best and racist at worst. Especially since this book is so extremely British biased, describing the non-white allies as primitives is just terrible. It harkens back to colonialist mindsets. Davies should be ashamed of his views.

I would not consider the failed Irish invasion a French victory by any means. Courage means nothing if you can't properly sail your ship.
Is Nelson's way of command only taught in Britain? In the West? Without sources this book can just make whatever claims it wishes.

The narrative style is good when talking about battles and expeditions, but it rubs me the wrong way when it's providing the thoughts and feelings of the men.
The book's synopsis did not say it would be so overwhelmingly biased to the British.
Good ol' Talleyrand 😅
Why did Nelson lose his arm?

The levity that Davies brings to his writing actually helps the narrative here where he's describing the ludicrous series of events that are occurring on the expedition to Ireland. The fact that an invasion failed because the French didn't know how to "park" their ships is just ridiculously good comedy.

These mutinees are far more polite than I'd imagined from pop culture.

With all the modern concerns of climate change and deforestation, it's hard to keep in mind that this isn't novel. England cutting down most of their trees to the point where they almost ran out of Oaks is a great example.

I usually love these books due to the bibliography/citations but this one doesn't even have that!

I can't tell if Davies is trying to be humorous or just has a very informal writing style.
