The descriptions of Ezra Stark in the opening pages of “The Right Hand,” are amazing, as well as the contours of the boy’s internal world, his feelings toward the man, Stark. Utterly compelling so far.

Finished reading the first story, “Spring Flood.” Deeply impressed by the writing, a distant, omniscient point of view, the incessant description of the flood waters, the mud and muck, of old Gerber’s turtle-like physicality, his blackness. Aside from the story feeling very symbolic—Dahlman literally and figuratively burdened by Gerber’s body, his presence, I felt there were many lessons to be learned about craft.
