Many of the descriptions of the intake process: shaving, segregation, renouncing of parental rights, confiscation of outside clothing and belongings, the inadequacy of food and bedding--reminds me of the workhouse chapters in The Midwife.

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy. If I were the type to get tattoos, that would be the one.

I will always try, but often fail, when it comes to pronouncing Albanian surnames

Reading about the absolutely atrocious level of "care" in Teresa's Kolkatta home for the dying - and how volunteers tried to justify to themselves what they were told to do - reminds me of the Milgram experiments designed to gauge the power of authority in getting otherwise decent people to harm others.

This book - written by a native of Kolkatta - is making me incredibly angry on behalf of genuinely suffering people. The Albanian nun's manipulation of the media, her constant lying and inflation of the truth, and her general lack of caring about people if it meant generating material resources for them or if not connected to her personal spiritual mission did not make her a humanitarian in the slightest.
