If you really think about the story of the Trojan War, and all the futile back and forth and blood and death, it seems that the Iliad and all related works constitute one of the all-time great literary portrayals of hell. In Troilus and Cressida, Shakespeare seems to take that position exactly. They call it a tragedy, but it reads like a black comedy.

Having recently seen Verdi's Falstaff, it's an interesting question whether the opera is an improvement on The Merry Wives of Windsor. I suppose, as always, I would need to actually see it on stage to compare. I can see why people say the Falstaff of this play is not quite his Faltaffian self, but it's still pretty funny.
