Boy does he have an axe to grind. Now I know where the idea of Guy Fawkes being gloomy and humorless if not started then became more popular. Also first account I've read that gives Flanders as the origins of the Gunpowder. No mention of the Essex Rebellion or that by this time Jesuits under orders to do nothing political and Catholics were told to be like Paul by the Pope.

And I'd already be arguing with this historian if I knew which sources were available to him for research and which weren't.

Well at least this author writing in the 1800's is clear that his bias and thesis are anti Roman Catholic. Probably going to end up in an argument with this dead historian by the end of this book, but at least he's up front.

Fascinating bit of history about the gunpowder revolt & how Guy Fawkes really came to the notice of history. A study on how religion can go (& remain) so wrong.
