This book is a epoch-making masterpiece in Chinese culture history and is an active result in the New Culture Movement（五四运动）. Its publication consolidated Hu Shis（胡适） academic status. It is the first work of using modern academic method to systematically research ancient philosophical history as well as the first ancient Chinese philosophical history written by applying the bourgeoisie opinions and methods.
