Just finished the first novel in the collection, Taras Bulba and was surprised by the amount of antisemitism in the book, it leaves a pretty bad taste in the mouth and spoils any of the really nice passages that are in there.

Off to a good start. Very Russian. Or...Ukrainian...or...

I read "The Overcoat" which is one of the short stories featured in this. I wanted to read it because it was featured in "The Namesake". The was a story about a strange little man in St. Petersburg who works as a clerk and has a painfully threadbare coat. It was dark, depressing and had no likable characters. I am not going to read the rest of this.
