Ya okay I’m dnfing I just don’t like the writing story or the characters. Maybe I’ll try to read it again late but I doubt it.

Much has been said about Laura Kinsale's prose and character work, but I need to give this woman credit for her research! This book must have been suuuch an undertaking and it is paying off in spades!

Багато досліджень було вкладено в цю книгу, зазвичай цей жанр не копає так глибоко в економіку 19 століття, всі ці mundane details тогочасного життя роблять дану історію не просто багатошаровою, а й унікальною.

On top of Quaker Plain Speech there is now dandy slang 🫠🫠🫠 I admire the depth of the research that went into writing this book, but it’s so hard to understand! What next? Cockney?

Тому що мати зберігаються в окремій частині мозку на відміну від решти мовлення. “Those words he knew. He could have said them, too. He’d tried it, when he was alone, a whole list of curses in English and Italian and German and French. They were like mathematics; they were right there ready when everything else was inaccessible.”

I’m not sure I wish to continue. For starters, this thee-thou-Quacker-Society-of-Friends-First-Day-Ninth-Month stuff irritates me. However, Kinsale’s plots and style are always unique and the scene where the duke describes Maddy to her blind father is majestic. But the said duke had a stroke so I’m not sure I can take all this agony of recovery…
