“Fear of society is deeper in her than fear of God. She has moved from something abstract to something more immediate and concrete. Poised on the edge of freedom, more physical than emotional, she reflects in many ways the uncertainty of the emerging 'in-between' woman, a creature of the rising middle class, trapped in a world of consumer comforts, of fantasies churned out by cinema and the video.”

Enjoying this a lot! But Jung talks about the previous generation of women as if they were content with their life of purdah, and I wonder how accurate that is? naturally there are exceptions to any rule but but how widespread was dissatisfaction among women in purdah before the generation discussed in this book?

I'm wondering how relevant this still is, since it was written in 1986 - I intend to read the sequel she wrote as soon as I'm done with this one.
