“Let’s find space for three short rows of Aquadulce Broad beans to be sown in November. These beans, autumn sown, mature early say in mid June, when none of us will be on holiday and we will eat them with a piece of gammon (beans and bacon are an ancient pheasant tradition) and a jug of parsley sauce and we will invite nobody but the family so that we can have a feast.”🫛

The plant invaders attack you with guile. They have smiling faces. They offer to share your property on friendly terms. They promise to help you keep it furnished and tidy. Then, they show you their true nature and swamp everything else, the cuckoos of the plant world. 🤣

At the end of one of these letters, she writes,
“You must hurry if you want to plant your tree this year, otherwise we could do some gardening visiting in the summer and choose a tree to plant next winter. You will have to shop quickly if you want a tree now…I will help you plant your tree, you and Nick doing the work while I stand by giving maddening advice.”🤣

I’m a sucker for books in which people write about their gardens.
