It would be well not to make oneself too conspicuous in such neighborhoods— especially north of the river since the people were sullen and hostile. Some strangers had even disappeared.

That item, gathered by chance in a haunt of sailors, seemed indeed rather far–fetched; since the low, black reef lay a full mile and a half out from Innsmouth Harbor.
