“God made (the covenant of works) with the Israelites for no other end, than that man, being thereby convinced of his weakness, might flee to Christ. So that it was renewed only to help forward and introduce another and a better covenant; and so to be a manuduction unto Christ…to discover sin, to waken the conscience, and to convince them of their own impotency, and so drive them out of themselves to Christ.”

His explanation of the covenant at Sinai…. Yes.
I would have saved myself a lot of embarrassing conversations had I read this 2 years ago.

It’s really unfortunate that I am just now reading this for the first time. Wow.

"And thus did our Lord Jesus Christ enter into the same covenant of works that Adam did to deliver believers from it...the titles which [Paul] gives these two, Christ and Adam, are exceeding observable...speaking of them as if there never had been any more men in the world besides these two; thereby making them head and root of all mankind, they having, as it were, the rest of the sons of men included in them."

Boston's notes on the law as a covenant of works:

"Sinners being united to Christ by faith, return, being carried back the same way they came; only their own feet never touch the ground; but the glorious Mediator, sustaining the persons of them all, walked every bit of the road exactly (Gal. 4:4-5)."

Praise God that Christ fulfilled the law where sinful man could not, and thus carries us with him into eternal life!

"As for the distinction betwixt the law of faith and the law of Christ, the latter is subordinated unto the former. All men by nature are under the law of works; but taking the benefit of the law of faith, by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, they are set free from the law of works, and brought under the law of Christ. 'Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden - take my yoke upon you' (Matt. 11:28-9)."
