So far, a lot of interesting anecdotes but not a lot of analysis. When the author does offer any kind of interpretation, it feels like something you could have come up with yourself like, "The magic must have worked often enough that people kep paying these people, since reputation was everything then." Valid, but not something I need an expert in the field to come up with for me.
