Status Updates From Confessions

Incredibly beautiful.

“…now, in truth, I pity far more the man who takes joy in his wickedness, than the man who can hardly bear it when some pernicious pleasure is scraped away, and he loses a felicity that is miserable.”

“I sought for something to love, loving to be in love…”

“And so I polluted the springs of friendship with the filthy things I craved…I hurled myself into love, longing to be taken captive.”

“You called and cried out loud and shattered my deafness. You were radiant and resplendent, you put to flight my blindness. You were fragrant, and I drew in my breath and now pant after you. I tasted you, and I feel but hunger and thirst for you. You touched me, and I am set on fire to attain the peace which is yours.”

“Where I discovered the truth there I found my God, truth itself, which from the time I learnt it, I have not forgotten. And so, since the time I learnt of you, you remain in my consciousness, and there I find you when I recall you and delight in you. Pt. 2 “That is the authentic happy life, to set one's joy on you, grounded in you and caused by you. That is the real thing, and there is no other. Those who think that the happy life is found elsewhere, pursue another joy and not the true one.”

Pt. 1 “Far be it from me, Lord, far from the heart of your servant who is making confession to you, far be it from me to think myself happy, whatever be the joy in which I take my delight. There is a delight which is given not to the wicked (Isa. 48: 22), but to those who worship you for no reward save the joy that you yourself are to them.”
