Many of my students liked Pelzer's "A Child Called It", and I will start recommending that they read this. Pulver's father was abusive in the extreme, the book starts with him as a child with a shotgun barrel in his mouth, his father saying he will kill him and his brothers. Wrestling saves him; gives him a fighting chance.
