She couldn't bring herself to sign 'Yours, A,' but she did write Fondly, Aurelie,' and she suspected that Hapless liked it just as much. He had started using the word 'fondly' much more in conversation, at the very least. He even at one point mused, "Fondly would make a very nice Court name, wouldn't it?" to which Aurelie replied, "Pardon?" and Hapless, growing rather red, said, "Just thinking aloud."

Hapless clasped Aurelie's shoulders, leaned in, and for a split second she thought he meant to kiss her, but instead, he looked her right in the eyes. "He needs you. And he needs me, too, so let's not let him have us both." He gripped her shoulders tighter, leaning in closer, their foreheads nearly touching. "He cannot see you." His eyes were bright. "He cannot see you. He cannot see you."

"Bread costs five copper," he said.
"What?"
"At least, it did at the bakery by campus," he continued, quiet and fast. "I used to walk down there to buy a loaf every morning that I could—it made me think of you."

"That's how it works, though, isn't it?" Aurelie said eventually. "Someone asks you how you are, and you say fine; you say very well. You don't say how you really are because they don't really care, do they?"
"I care," Illiana said. "If I ask, I care. If I ask, tell me the truth." She paused. "So. How are you? How do you feel?"

"The longer we're in the woods, the safer we'll be. Trust me."
"When I trusted you earlier, I got sucked into the ground."
"That was an unfortunate oversight. I can nearly guarantee that it won't happen again."
"Nearly guarantee?"
"Well, nothing is entirely guaranteed, is it? I'd look quite the fool if I entirely guaranteed it and then you went and got sucked into the ground again."

"I'm sure the university would rather the prince arrive alive than in a timely fashion."
"Could we not strive for both?" asked Hapless.
"Impossible," Quad said. "Mortals may be either alive or on time. They cannot be both."
Hapless grinned.

"What the devil was that?" Iliana asked, guiding Aurelie through the circle of trees.
"It was a hand," Aurelie said. "A hand! With fingers!"
"How many?"
"Shockingly, I didn't have time to count as it was pulling me into the earth."
