I think the reason the Author has the Robots not be immortal is to explore the theme of life's preciousness. Moscap describes how something in its last stage of life can still be beautiful. I feel this is the philosophy that is at the core of the robots. Even though their life will end, they value it more because it does not last forever and is something that should not be taken for granted.

Dex refusing to let Mosscap fill the water tank shows how they are guilty of the past. This guilt comes from the history of humans using robots as tools in their society. Dex doesn't want to treat Mosscap like a servant, even though the robot just wants to help. Dex's guilt over the past makes them treat Mosscap like a victim instead of a friend. This shows how old history can create awkward hurdles in the present.

In this chapter, Mosscap seemed to have a purpose in his journey out of the robots' home. He knows exactly why he is there and he has a clear goal or mission. Thus, Mosscap feels secure in its role as a representative of the robots. However, Dex does not know what they are doing. Dex was searching for crickets but they don't exactly have a clear goal. That makes me think of the question: what do humans actually need?
