Status Updates From Anyone's Ghost

This book was so slow to start for me but halfway through I found myself highlighting so many different sections, paragraph after paragraph in an attempt to preserve these sticky passages when I turn the page. I've actually squealed while reading this. I thought this would be a book I could just have on my kindle to read at night while I fall asleep but it's actually the thing that's been keeping me up.

Time's proportions make no sense. It is grotesque, the forgetting, when all I can think of now is life without him.

I held out my hand to do our signature shake. He grabbed my forearm, and I grabbed his. Then he pulled me toward him. I jolted. He put his arm around me, giving me a car hug. He squeezed tight, and I did too. His back felt so warm under my hand.

I lost the women not to an exodus but to a steady depletion. Cousins moved, plans got canceled, my mother too depressed to host. It was a time when the noise of the people of my life took on such a slow, perfect diminuendo that I only realized what I'd lost when silence finally arrived; that summer, for the first time, I noticed that my childhood home had an echo.
