He screamed her name as the destruction continued to roll in front of him. A sharp jolt jammed the earth upward in front of him and his ankle snapped, sending a bolt of agony along his leg. He crashed to the ground clutching his ruined limb. The hard ground softened beneath his back. Terror gripped him, but it was too late. His final scream was engulfed by a wave of earth and rock that swallowed him whole.

He kept moving forward as more explosions sounded and the heat from the inferno scorched his neck. The earth rolled like a quilt lofted onto a bed, the wave carrying the burning trees and buildings of the town up, then down. He cried out as the church steeples rose high in the sky, then toppled one after another, their bells clanging. The dust from downtown’s destruction clouded the air as buildings collapsed.
