I belong to an independent congregation that blends conservative liturgy with reconstructionist practice. Membership is growing, not withering away as Leifer insists over and over. I don’t know if I’m even offended at his characterization of my temple as soon to be obsolete and my faith practice as “thin and shallow.” Instead, his mischaracterization of me and my community confirms his own ignorance.

It’s really something that Leifer interviews LGBTQ rabbis, compares their faith practice and congregations to “people doing yoga” or “Judaism vs burning man”; then valorizes Haredi communities, where LGBTQ people are closeted lest they be sent to conversion therapy—-which he notes in this book.

Right vs Left antisemitism. Dara Horn and Rachel Shabi have written it better in their books. Josh, please give me something interesting or I’ll bail for real this time.

I do give this a bonus star from mentioning a friend, a Rabbi in the south, who’s very kind and insightful

I continue not to understand who this is for. American Jewish readers know all this information and there isn’t enough context for anyone else

Not just redundant but reductive and wrong. Why is Rabin on a pedestal?

This Rabin chapter is so redundant. A better editor was needed. I’d love to read something here about American and Israeli Jews that isn’t Ashkenazi normative.

Not really anything new so far. I enjoyed the author on Haaretz podcast…
