“Anning [Mary, a woman who was the first to unearth a plesiosaur] was not among them; the Geological Society would be closed to women for almost another century, until 1919. At the time of the talk, only two plesiosaurs had ever been found. Mary Anning had found both of them. Conybeare (man giving speech at the society) never mentioned her name.”

When dinosaur bones were first found, they were believed to be bones from giant humans bc they couldn’t comprehend a separate species existed and then ceased to exist.

Before they knew what fossils were, they would find them and sell them as knickknacks, souvenirs, and to people who were superstitious, they were viewed similarly as we view crystals today!

The historical meet-cute on page 120 was the highlight of today's reading

Mary Anning was so cool.
