Not making a lot of progress on this one, I have trouble getting into Lois the Witch, but I think big part of it is me just being really tired, so... yeah. So far though, I definitely prefer Gaskell's "usual" stuff over her historical fiction.
There are also some unfortunate comments about Native Americans, although most of it could be chalked up to the characters being racist... I guess...

The introduction starts:
Mrs Gaskell (1810-65) was first and foremost a woman of her time, a lady of Victorian expansiveness. She was not a brilliant, nora passionate novelist like George Eliot or Charlotte Brontë...
And honestly, I am so enraged by this that I skipped right over the Introduction/Biographical Note. I might read it after I finish, but right now, I'm more tempted to tear it out of the book...
