One of the hardest things about reading a YA novel is taking a step back when I am bothered a teenager is not reacting the way I would as an adult. I was frustrated by this scene, but then stepped back to think about 18 yo me would have responded.

We see some character development from Laronte too! I wasn’t expecting that! None from Kendall and even though it’s sad that Noni still can’t decide if she should forgive her for calling her the nword, she is finally recognizing all of the ways Kendall has been racist/her privilege… and also hers and her faults (even though they DEFINITELY are not as bad as Kendall’s racism).

At first I was thinking this book would be like a 3-3.5⭐️ because I wasn’t really enjoying Noni and it felt slow for me at first, but now I am COMPLETELY invested.

I was right about Thomas being Hoyt’s dad!!! But I feel slow because I’m confused about everything else. Although we are seeing some bonding here! And an apology from mom!

Maybe I’m just petty but I wouldn’t have been telling him nothing after he couldn’t tell me he was moving. Especially not since he’s actually interested and ESPECIALLY not since it’s not my business to share.

But I’m glad she knows what racism is. I’m just confused at why she still has a hard time understanding it in her own life. At least we see some development.

Instead of hating and avoiding her, a daughter now yearns for her mother. She also is taking interest in what her mom believes is important and they could bond and find common ground over it, but alas… her mom has yet to try and relate to her daughter. All she does is dismiss her.

Lawrence is starring as the lead in his own minstrel show to please “Massa” as he says. He gets the laughs but just fails to acknowledge that he’s really the butt of the joke.

I just realized he’s black. I thought she said she was the only black person there and he just happened to have a black name. But still, he’s a stupid POS allowing his white gf to laugh at his racially charged jokes and she’s still stupid for taking it. And she talks about Latronte like she doesn’t distance himself from black people/culture as well. He’s just trying to be the black man okay with racism
